Western New Mexico University, also referred to as simply WNMU, established in 1893, as New Mexico Normal School, is a public university located in Silver City, which is the county seat of Grant County, situated in the US state of New Mexico, having a population estimated at a number of more than 10 500 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
WNMU currently has an enrollment of approximately 3200 students, and offers more than 70 areas of study, including 18 associate degrees and certificate programs, 41 baccalauereate degrees and 10 master's degrees. In 2003, for the quality education offered, Western New Mexico was the first 4-year university in the state to be recognized by Quality New Mexico with its highest honor, the Zia Award, in 2006 being awarded with the Large Business of the Year Award, from the Silver City Chamber of Commerce, 2 years later receiving the 2008 Pinon Recognition and the 2008 Companero Award.
WNMU's athletic teams are known as the Mustangs, who compete in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, in various sports, including in volleyball, tennis, basketball, cross-country, college football and golf. Among the teams' notable achievements there is the 2009-2010 RMAC Championship, won by the men's tennis team, which defeated every RMAC opponent in its conference.
Richard Angulo, with the NFL team Chicago Bears, Jerry D. Thompson, historian of the American Southwest and Kent Walz, editor of the Albuquerque Journal are WNMU's noteworthy alumni.
